Reevaluating Citizenship Revocation for Kuwaiti Citizens’ Wives: Balancing Justice and Family Stability

The Supreme Committee for the Investigation of Kuwaiti Citizenship is a complex and challenging matter from all legal, social, and psychological aspects. The issue has deeply affected the core of Kuwaiti national identity, requiring a painful remedy that demands careful consideration. The corruption that has taken root and spread within Kuwait for many years necessitates precision, caution, deliberation, and wisdom in addressing each case thoroughly.

For those who have committed fraud or hold dual nationalities, justice must be served. However, many of these wives obtained Kuwaiti citizenship in accordance with the law at the time. Therefore, it is essential to revisit the cases of revoking the citizenship of Kuwaiti citizens’ wives to avoid potential repercussions on Kuwaiti families. Many of these women adhered to the law, renounced their original nationalities, fulfilled the requirements for citizenship, and met the conditions for obtaining it. Most were granted citizenship many years ago, leaving them now in a precarious position: losing Kuwaiti citizenship and being unable to reclaim their original nationalities. This has caused significant distress in Kuwaiti society, especially for mothers and grandmothers who now find themselves stateless overnight.

These women have devoted their lives to their families and homes, reaching an advanced age, unable to start anew, and having no homeland other than Kuwait.

On the other hand, we fully support the government’s efforts to continue eradicating corruption related to forgers and individuals with dual nationalities without discrimination or delay. Most importantly, we call for swift justice against the corrupt officials who have manipulated national identity, turning Kuwaiti citizenship into a commodity in the political market. These individuals, with their vile intentions, should face severe and public accountability as a deterrent, in accordance with the law and the principles of our great religion, to put an end to this issue once and for all.

At the same time, we are closely following the repercussions of revoking citizenship from Kuwaiti citizens’ wives under Article 8, which has affected ongoing marriages. This has disrupted the stability of law-abiding Kuwaiti families, causing harm to peaceful households.

“Whoever desires the life of this world and its adornments – We fully repay them for their deeds therein, and they will not be wronged.” (Surah Hud, 15)

From this principle, we call for the wives of Kuwaiti citizens, who have built their families with loyalty, patience, and dedication, not to be treated in the same way as those guilty of fraud.

We particularly emphasize the cases of widows who have devoted their lives to raising their children after the passing of their husbands, upholding the values of their families with unwavering commitment.

May God Almighty be true in His words.
